This celebrated detail comes from Raphael’s Sistine Madonna, one of the masterpieces of the Italian High Renaissance. Commissioned by Pope Julius II for the monastery of San Sisto in Piacenza, the monumental altarpiece presents the Virgin and Child flanked by saints and surrounded by a host of angels. The two cherubs at the bottom—captured here in detail—have become iconic in their own right, admired for their disarming innocence and contemplative expressions. Today the original painting is housed in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, yet these angelic figures continue to transcend the larger composition, embodying Raphael’s gift for blending divine grace with human warmth.
