Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s La Troupe de Mademoiselle Églantine (1895–96) is a vivid lithographic poster that captures the energy and spectacle of Parisian nightlife at the fin de siècle. Created to promote the troupe’s performance at London’s Palace Theatre, the work portrays four can-can dancers in mid-kick, their dynamic silhouettes and flowing skirts evoking both rhythm and exuberance. Lautrec’s economical use of bold color and simplified form heightens the sense of movement, while also emphasizing the individuality of the performers, including the celebrated dancer Jane Avril, thought to appear on the left. At once a striking advertisement and a work of modern art, the poster exemplifies Lautrec’s mastery in elevating popular entertainment into an enduring icon of Belle Époque culture.
