Danaë (1907–1908) draws on the ancient Greek myth in which Zeus visits the imprisoned princess Danaë in a shower of golden rain. Gustav Klimt captures this moment of divine union through a sensuous, dreamlike composition: the woman’s curved posture, closed eyes, and flowing gold symbolize desire, fate, and transformation. Rich purples, golds, and soft textures merge seamlessly, embodying the opulence and eroticism of Klimt’s Golden Phase. The work stands as both a myth retold and a meditation on feminine divinity.
