Created in the 1950s, Blue Star is one of the rare masterpieces from Sanyu’s celebrated “blue period.” Against a deep, luminous background, the delicate white chrysanthemums seem to radiate an inner light, their slender stems and glass vase outlined with the refined simplicity of calligraphic line. Sanyu, often called the “Chinese Matisse,” seamlessly fused the elegance of traditional Chinese ink aesthetics with the bold modernism of Parisian avant-garde.
