Created in 1935, Exquisite Cadaver reflects Salvador Dalí’s engagement with one of the Surrealist movement’s most playful and radical experiments. The term “Exquisite Cadaver” (from the French cadavre exquis) refers to a collaborative game in which several artists contributed different sections of a figure on a folded sheet of paper, without seeing what the others had drawn. The surprising juxtapositions that emerged embodied the Surrealists’ fascination with chance, the unconscious, and collective creation. In Dalí’s interpretation, this spirit of unpredictability is combined with his distinctive dreamlike vision and meticulous technique, transforming a group exercise into a striking standalone work. Exquisite Cadaver captures both the humor and the subversive energy of Surrealism, while offering a glimpse into Dalí’s dialogue with his peers and his ongoing pursuit of the marvelous.
